Mahoney Trunk Murder and Lake Union

Mahoney Trunk Murder and Lake Union

  James E. Mahoney

Only a few years had passed since the opening of the University Bridge before James E. Mahoney murdered his wife and dumped her body in Portage Bay just east of the bridge, connecting Lake Union with Lake Washington.  The story is chilling and seems to be the kind of Hollywood movies.  In 1921, after the recovery of Kate Mahoney’s body and the conviction of her husband for her murder, the story received national press recognition, and was considered on the most elaborately planned murders of the decade, in an era where gangsters and bootleggers gained infamy for the crimes they committed.
