URBAN PERFORMANCE / CATALYZING LANDSCAPES

SEATTLE’S LAKE2BAY VISION and PLACE

"Create the healthiest urban space in the world to live, work, learn, study, create, visit, and play.”

This quarter’s advanced studio will concentrate on developing your creative sensibilities to and within design. Our framework will be a consideration of landscape architecture as an art and a science, and specifically how that shapes what it means to design a healthy neighborhood.  You will investigate how we might define and experience vitality, health, and art- all components of 21st century urban visions. You will consider your role as a designer within the urban realm, how your praxis reflects your own values and visions as well as those of the communities. Thus this is both a design studio and an investigation of your praxis- your practice and your theory- as advanced design students.

Cities are places of great complexity, how might we exploit this to create spaces where urban dwellers can be both actors and participants of civic life? PERFORMANCE is both an act and a metric, a drama and a critique. The theme – URBAN PERFORMANCE- is intended to provoke us to consider the role of processes, actions, and movements at work within the urban realm, registering phenomena that are unique to them and stimulating change across them over time. Consider how design might serve as a score for fostering urban life by catalyzing action, engagement, thought, and critique.  As designers we encourage or inhibit urban life through the spaces we create within the public realm.

The theme – CATALYTIC LANDSCAPES - is intended to generate thinking on and about processes, actions, and movements at work within the urban realm, registering phenomena that are unique to them and stimulating change across them over time.  Cities are places of great learning and innovation, how might we exploit this to create spaces that stimulate city life and territories beyond?  Rather than thinking of landscape architecture as an art of beautification or “improvement”, we consider it an active participant in urban development redirecting energy and matter into new arrangements and geometries over time.
